Major International Project with the Seven Network

FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™

With the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 being played on home soil, the Seven Network had managed to secure the rights for the Free-to-Air broadcasting of some World Cup matches.

This was obviously a major milestone for the company and for the 7Sport digital team as it is the biggest sporting event in the world for female football.

Given I am a football nuffy and the sport runs through my veins, I was lucky enough to be asked by the management if I would be happy to be 2IC for Seven’s coverage of the event on social media. Of course I said yes.

Given the client was FIFA there was quite alot of preparation by the senior figures in the team to prepare templates, watermarks, end plates, pre/post roll videos etc.

FIFA are very strict with the content we could post and placed very strict limits of how much game footage, pre game footage and user-generated content we could post.

This made creating content and posting about the event challenging.

There were so many rules and stipulations to follow before, during and after matches that it was sometimes tough to ensure we didn’t make any mistake.

Naturally there were a few teething issues as myself and others in the department figured out the boundaries and understanding of the rules entirely but once we had a clear picture our coverage was inspiring.

I was lucky enough to cover four games that were broadcast on Seven channels nationally and to also cover games that weren’t broadcast by Seven.

For non-broadcast games this included posting full-time score graphics, posts updating fans about important events eg. red cards, comeback wins etc.

Majority of my work was for Seven’s broadcast games. My favourite of these was the Round of 16 - Sweden vs USA game. The match went to penalties after the Swedish goalkeeper, Zecira Musovic had an outstanding game in net.

The United States lost on penalties and the winning penalty involving VAR went viral on social media.

Below is all the content I posted on Instagram for the game:

Accompanied by the success of the Matildas, I was extremely privileged and honored to be able to cover an event like a World Cup, with Seven, as my first major international sporting event I have worked on.

I learnt so many lessons, gained plenty of advice and gained skills that I will definitely take with me into the future for similar large scale events and any social media activity as well.

Below is all other video content I posted during the event.
